Ever had food indigestion? It usually happens when you have eaten – eaten too much and the food has not had time to digest.
It is usually accompanied with discomfort as the stomach still feels full after long hours of eating and sometimes with burning sensations. Then food starts to look less and less appealing, no matter how delicious it would have otherwise looked. Sounds familiar?
This can be avoided by involving in activities after eating to hasten metabolism hence helping with digestion.
Just like in the physical, spiritual indigestion also happens, probably more often than we may like to admit.
Spiritual indigestion happens when you have consumed a lot of spiritual food and you don’t give it time to digest. You find yourself constantly listening to the Word of God, yet your soul seems starved.
It happens when the word remains in the mind but has not yet gained residence in the heart. It may cultivate in you the spirit of pride because you believe you know much more of the word but in essence, no real impact of those words are seen in your life. Then, just like food begins to look unappealing, the sermons you listen to start to feel less and less powerful. You begin to wonder if your preacher is losing his/her anointing, or is it that they keep repeating the same message one too many times?
You no longer receive the messages with the eager passion you used to and even begin to unknowingly mark and rate your man of God’s teachings.
How to deal with this? The antacid for this kind of indigestion is meditation on the words you have heard so that they travel to your heart, professing them and living those words. God told Joshua in Joshua 1:8 to meditate on the word day and night and to do all it says, so he will prosper in all his ways and be successful. The only way the word of God will make you prosperous and successful is to meditate on it and to do according to all that is written in it.
So maybe the next time you sit in church or you are listening to a sermon and it feels like the word has no power, or that it’s too familiar, or the teacher is starting to lose his fire and anointing, you should take a step back and do a little introspection. Ask yourself if you have fully digested all the spiritual food you have consumed, then maybe, you can fully savour and appreciate the new food you’re being served.
